The men depicted in Thracian tombs: clad for a celebration, hunt or battle

Abstract

Nearly all men depicted in the Thracian tombs in Kazanlak, Sveshtari, and Alexandrovo are represented clothed, and their attire appears to reflect their rank and occupation. They are pictured in different narratives as warriors, hunters, participants in processions and banqueting. Both Greek and non-Greek types of clothing can be recognised among the costumes, with some reflecting the Hellenic perception of Eastern/exotic garment or being a hybrid between local and foreign attire. The outfits are completed by typical of the Hellenistic era shoes, belts, hats, various types of weapons, and golden crowns, as well as the hairstyles of the men. The clothes depicted are hardly exact replicas of the costumes actually worn at the time, but their appearance was certainly recognisable to the commissioners of the tombs. It appears that it was important for them to have the chosen characters presented as skilled in riding, hunting, warfare, and secular life.
